Shayma Hassouna
Lecturer in Arabic Language
smhassouna@ucdavis.edu
818 Sproul Hall

Shayma Hassouna has been a lecturer of Arabic Language Courses at UC Davis since the Fall of 2006. She has taught languages since 1989 both in Egypt and the U.S. Originally an English Literature and Linguistics major as an undergraduate at Alexandria University in Egypt, her graduate work took a turn toward comparative literature and culture. Her interest in the comparative aspect of her native language and culture and those of the West grew as she studied and researched more. She has trained as a simultaneous translator, a radio announcer, and a professional teacher. She taught at Alexandria University from 1989 and soon became head of the Drama Group in the English Department, where language and culture were enhanced by her students’ experience performing in English. She was also a Fulbright Scholar at Ohio University in 1992. When she moved to America in 1993, she worked on translations and presentations locally and abroad and also taught music, French language, Egyptian culture, and Arabic language in several venues. Hassouna took part in organizing many multi-cultural events in the community, working with the Davis school district to help non-English speaking families, presenting at race-education conferences, and organizing educational and cultural sessions for children at schools, girl-scout troops, and local book groups. At present her main interest is to help the Arabic Program at UC Davis grow and become richer and more efficient.
