Study Abroad

Interior of the Pantheon, Rome

Why Study Abroad?

We encourage Classics students to study abroad. Living in the lands where the Greeks and Romans themselves lived activates and solidifies knowledge gained in Classics courses. At the same time it allows students to broaden their cultural horizons as they enter more fully into the world of classical scholarship, which is a uniquely international and intercultural endeavor.

Programs

Most UC Davis students who study abroad do so through the many options offered by the UC Davis Education Abroad Program [EAP]. Around the world, the EAP has developed study-abroad opportunities that mesh seamlessly with normal University curricula, fees, and financial aid so that students can attend classes in other countries with no disruption to their normal course of study. They can take advantage of year-abroad, quarter-abroad, and summer-abroad programs.

With a bit more planning and advising, students also can attend non-UC Davis programs. There are many choices. Moreover, the University of California maintains a membership in the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, and an affiliation with the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. These two institutions are the premier places for classics students from United States colleges and universities to study abroad.

Advising

If you want further information, please speak to or email any Classics instructor. We're even happy to introduce you to students who have already studied abroad so that you can get a better idea what to expect. Also feel free to call the UC Education Abroad Program at (530) 297-4633.
