This course explores the history of the Roman Republic and Roman Empire as they grew from a
small, central Italian settlement into one of the largest political entities in global history. In many
narratives about the Roman Empire, this growth is considered a spectacular historical
success—but was it? This course will examine the complicated balance in Roman history
between individual ambition, colonization, governing, and myths of power and virtue. Students
will learn the outline of Roman history from its foundation stories to the beginning of late
antiquity, and will consider the historical and ethical question, when is it a good thing to get what
you want?
