This class will interrogate the social, political, and economic history of food and wine in ancient Mediterranean cultures. Topics covered include ancient crops and farming practices, the development of agricultural strategies and technology in ancient societies, trade and agricultural economies, agrarian empires, representations of food and wine in literature and the visual arts, significance of eating and drinking in myth and religious practices, etc.
