This class will interrogate the social, political, and economic history of food and drink (especially wine and beer) in the ancient Mediterranean world. To that end, we will explore what foods and drinks the people of the ancient Mediterranean consumed, how these consumables were produced, and the wider role food and drink played in ancient societies. Indeed, food was not only necessary to sustain life, but also played a crucial role in generating wealth that sustained cities, kingdoms, and empires and was a central medium through which ancient societies established, explored, and reshaped cultural values and beliefs.
