CLA 060 Magic in the Ancient Greco-Roman World

Course Description: This course will explore magical practices and theories in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Mesopotamia. Topics covered will include definitions of magic and spell-casters, evidence for spells and curses in texts and material culture, magic’s place in ancient societies, magic vs. science in the ancient world, and the modern afterlife of ancient magical practices.
