This course will examine the various forms and functions of writing in the ancient Mediterranean. Primary focus will be on papyrus and related technologies, as well as the modern history of papyrology (the study of ancient papyri). In addition to traditional reading and writing assignments, this course will involve hands-on work (also known as "experimental archaeology") recreating ancient materials and techniques.
