Course Description: Slavery was a ubiquitous practice in antiquity. Yet, its instantiations changed over time, as different societies envisioned and forced enslavement in different ways. This class will look at the institutions of slavery in the ancient Mediterranean world, focusing especially on Sparta, Crete, Athens, and Rome. It will examine some of the key texts providing a philosophical defense or condemnation of slavery, while looking exploring how political systems, gender, ethnicity, and economics impacted enslavement. The class will also pay particular attention to the question of enslavement, labor systems, economics, and technological development.
