Lecture/Discussion TR 3:10 PM 4:30 PM WELLMN 00103

In this course, we will read Hippocrates, Airs Waters Places, a fifth century BCE medical text that explains not only how our surroundings cause disease but also how ethnic or racial differences actually derive from environmental factors. Students will use this treatise to examine the construction of difference in the Mediterranean and how it both influenced and differs from modern conceptions. First and foremost, though, this course aims to solidify students’ knowledge of Attic grammar and morphology. It will enrich students’ vocabulary and increase the speed, enjoyment and critical insight with which they read Greek texts. By the end of the semester they should prepared to take more advanced courses or to read further on their own.
