GRK 100 Readings in Greek Prose

A. Uhlig

Prerequisite(s): GRK 003; or equivalent.

Greek 100 covers the critical transitional stage between introductory language acquisition and reading facility. The aim of this course is to reinforce mastery of foundational grammar while at the same time facilitating development of core reading skills.A solid command of vocabulary and morphology is essential for reading ancient Greek with ease. In order to solidify this core skill, we will be completing all drills and exercises in Hansen and Quinn’s Greek: an Intensive Course.

Our in-class readings will be drawn from a selection of Greek prose writers from various periods. The focus of our reading will be on understanding points of grammar and syntax, rather than aiming for a perfect or definitive English translation.

Required Text: Hansen and Quinn’s Greek: an Intensive Course (2nd edition)(available at the UC Davis bookstore).

In addition I highly recommend that you invest in a copy of Smyth’s Greek Grammar (revised edition) and the Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon of Liddell and Scott. These reference works are key tools that you will continue to use as long as you are reading Greek.

Copies of in-class Greek readings will be supplied by the instructor.
