In this course we will read Hippocrates’ Airs Waters Places in ancient Greek, focusing on the second half of the treatise. This text talks about the ways that environments affect human bodies, whether engendering by illnesses or creating ethnic differences. We will discuss questions of epistemology, health, nature vs. nurture, race and ethnicity, and sex and gender, all while exploring the cultural impacts of the Greco-Persian wars of the early fifth century BCE.

Although we will explore such thematic topics, this course primarily aims to solidify your knowledge of Attic grammar and morphology, while helping you to become comfortable with the ~1500 most common Greek words. This will increase the speed, enjoyment and critical insight with which you read Greek texts. By the end of the semester students should be capable of taking graduate level courses or reading further on their own.
