Course Description: In this class, we’ll be exploring the world of Tacitus’ Annales, a work which offers one Roman historian's view of the reigns of several Roman emperors (spanning from Tiberius to Nero). Our readings will take us across political intrigue and manipulation, the dramatic collusions of various imperial families, and the rather creative ways in which a Roman emperor might try to eliminate those who crossed him! We’ll also consider Tacitus’ own place in Roman history, his authorial persona and biases, and the legacy of the Annales on even our own understanding of early imperial Rome today.
Prerequisite(s): LAT 100; or equivalent.
