In this course, we’ll examine how Roman writers reimagine the mythic figure of Medea and her complex story of trust and its betrayal. Through select excerpts from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Seneca’s Medea - a tragedy which engages in intriguing ways with Euripides’ play of the same name - we’ll consider what these writers both preserve and alter from the previous tradition. We’ll also think about what particular resonances her specific tale might have in the socio-cultural contexts of early imperial Rome.
