Classics students and faculty are invited to a special tour and opportunity for conversation about the Mike Henderson exhibition Mike Henderson: Before the Fire, 1965-1985 currently on display at the Manetti Shrem Museum.

Featuring the paintings, films and music of UC Davis Professor Emeritus Mike Henderson, and co-curated by a UC Davis grad, the exhibition brings to light the artist’s rarely seen contributions to the history of contemporary painting and filmmaking, radical Black politics, and the story of California art. The exhibition integrates paintings, films and music by Henderson that offer new ideas about Black life in the visual languages of protest, Afro-futurism and surrealism.

The Classics program will have a private viewing while the galleries are closed to the public and a behind-the-scenes experience followed by an opportunity to reflect and discuss informally over lunch.

While not directly influenced by the ancient Mediterranean world, Henderson’s work on identity, race, social justice, religion, and nationhood is deeply powerful and thought-provoking.

Please join us for this unique opportunity!

WHEN: Tuesday March 14th between 12-1.30pm, lunch will be provided

WHERE: Meet at the Manetti Shrem Museum
